Dams

We feed our mature cow herd very little supplemental feed except during a bad winter (or after a severe drought and hailstorm as in 2021).  We generally start feeding a protein supplement to the registered herd and coming 2’s a couple of months before calving to ensure they and the calf are strong and healthy as they start calving a little ahead of the commercial herd.

PHOTO TAKEN IN SEPTEMBER 2021 AFTER HOT, DRY, SMOKY SUMMER WITH NO SUPPLEMENTAL FEED TO COWS.  BY TEACHING THE CALVES TO EAT CAKE WHILE STILL ON THEIR MOMMA’S, THEY GO RIGHT TO EATING AT WEANING WITH VERY LITTLE SICKNESS AND ZERO DEATH LOSS IN 2021.
